• I completed my course awhile ago, what should I do?
  The changes are minor and designed to help people remember how to perform CPR. If you are due for recertification or it's expired, this is a good time to come in and do a course.

   

• Can I still use what I was previously taught even though it's now outdated?
  The minor changes are designed to help people remember how to perform CPR. Yes, however if you are due for a re-certification or it's expired this is a good time to come in and do a course. The Australian Resuscitation Council and St John recommend you do a CPR refresher annually.

   

• Will these changes apply to infant resuscitation as well?
  The minor changes are designed to help people remember how to perform CPR. Yes, it will. If you completed your course prior to the changes, you can still use your training and you won't need to do another course until it's time to re-certify. However, the Australian Resuscitation Council and we recommend you do a CPR refresher annually.

• Why should I learn first aid?
  Helping someone in the critical moments before professional help arrives can mean the difference between life and death. It can be as simple as lifting a person's chin to open their airway, allowing them to breathe.

• Who should learn first aid?
  Everyone should learn first aid. You never know when you will need it - for you or your family.

   

• Should my partner do a first aid course?
  Definitely! Your partner may be the only person around to help. Every person trained in first aid contributes to safer families and communities.

   

• If I don't have children do I need to learn first aid?
  Definitely! First aid is a gift we can give anybody who needs it. Every person trained in first aid contributes to safer families and communities.

• What will I learn?
  Senior First Aid teaches you: resuscitation techniques (incl CPR), managing the unconscious casualty, bleeding, wounds, shock, poisons, bites and stings, safety and hazards, fractures, sprains and strains, head, neck and spinal injury, eye, ear or mouth injury, chest pain and injury, breathing difficulties, abdominal or pelvic injury, exposure to heat and cold, infection control, first aid team.

  Caring For Kids teaches you: resuscitation of an infant and child, control of bleeding, wounds, management of shock, poisoning and acute illness, burns, bites, stings.

   

• Will I learn CPR?
  Yes, both Senior First Aid and Caring For Kids include resuscitation.

   

• What can I expect from a from a first aid course?
  St John first aid courses are class room based. Whilst you learn the theoretical elements there are practical scenarios for casualty management and CPR.

   

• How much are first aid courses?
  Senior First Aid is $180, Caring for Kids is $105

   

• How long are first aid courses?
  Senior First Aid can be a one day or two day course, depending on whether you choose the flexible learning option. Caring For Kids is a one day course.

   

• What if I don't have time to do a first aid course?
  St John offers a number of flexible learning options for Senior First Aid and other courses. Talk to our customer service team on 1800 ST JOHN

• Is the course difficult?
  No. The course will teach you common sense responses and our trainers will guide you through the course. A basic level of English is needed.

   

• Do I get a certificate at the end?
  Yes, for Senior First Aid you will receive a nationally recognised certificate. For Caring for Kids, you will receive a certificate of attendance.

   

• If I learn first aid, do I have to help a stranger?
  No, however St John first aid courses give you the skills, knowledge and courage to help anyone in an emergency.

   

• What if I try to help and make the situation worse?
  In a life threatning emergency, to do something, is better than to do nothing. First aid training is about sustaining life and minimising further injury until the ambulance arrives. Certainly, many of those who have had to use their skills in an emergency, reflect on how their training was enough to allow them to just do what they had to do until the professional help arrived.

  As long as you make a reasonable attempt to help a casualty, the NSW Civil Liability Act 2002 (sometimes known as the Good Samaritan Act) says that you will not incur any personal civil liability.
